I’m a typeface junky and I love using small caps in my wedding invitations; especially love using them with lots of airy letter- and wordspacing. Sometimes I even give each letter extra height. I think they give an elegant and formal feel to the invitation. What is a “small cap” you ask?? (or maybe you didn’t!) Small caps are uppercase letterforms drawn at a lowercase scale; they’re about as tall as the font’s x-height, ie the average height of a lowercase letter. See an example below……
If you look quickly you might think that a small cap is just a regular capital letter scaled uniformly down to a smaller size. Actually, a correctly drawn small cap is a carefully crafted letterform that differs from a uniformly-scaled-down capital letter. The design software I use most respects the type designer’s proportioned small caps and the fonts I select are full sets that have dedicated small caps.
